How Do I Grade? |
My job is to know what's in your brain... and I want to know whats in there as frequently as possible. The more feedback I give you on a particular skill, the better you will get at it. At the end of the day, I need your grade to reflect your actual percentage of mastery.
If you focus on your grade, you will stress and struggle. If you focus on understanding, the grades will come. |
Skills Check (5–15 pts):
Skills Checks cover one specific section, topic, or skill and are only on one section covered in the previous day’s notes, classwork and/or homework. This is the most important assessment; it will reveal any misunderstandings, weaknesses or lack of practice and won't hurt your grade. Quiz (15–40 pts): On a few sections or topcs . It's an amalgamation of skills sets on small scale; quizzes assess if you know when to use each skill on its own and in connection with each other. All quizzes can be cummulateive, althought hey will focus, primarily on the material covered in the last few sections. Quest (30–50 pts): On the majority of a unit. May be given in lieu of a unit test (if the unit is too large and should be broken up) or given between a quiz and a test (to assess amalgamation of skills on a larger scale). Test (50–80 pts): On one complete unit, but is commulative and uses prrevious skills. There will usually be a comprehensive review given that will give you plenty of notice on the types of questions that will be asked. Classwork (1-10 pts): Any work that you area allowed to work on with resources (the internet, notes, groups, etc). Final (Max of 20% of MP4): Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2: On all the material covered in the course, but focusing mainly on the second half. Precalculus: On all the material covered after year semester. |
Homework (1–3) pts):
Is posted with an answer key and is NOT checked daily. Homework is for YOU to master each skill and get all your mistakes out of the way before moving on to the next step. It will, though, be randomly collected and assessed on different things, depending on the day and assignment (correctness, completion, problem(s) chosen at random or if I want to look at onein particular). HW is worth very little so it will not significantly hurt or help your grade - it's just a snapshot of what you've done that night prepare for class. Typically, if you are absent for a HW check, it's not a zero, but you cannot make it up - if there is an exception, I will mark the assignment as "missing" Participation (1-0 pts): Participation is awarded throughout the marking period, 1-2 points at a time. At random intervals, I will record who in the class is engaging in requested or expected behavior (having requested materials with you, coming to class on time, talking out homework and working on it as soon as you sit down, remaining working until the last minute, not having a cell phone out, etc). Students will be given either 1 or 0 point. If you are absent for a Participation check, it's not a zero, but you cannot make it up. Extra/Optional Credit (1–5 pts): Bonus Questions: Will be given on many quizzes, tests, etc. Will assess if you remember a skill learned previously, contain a critical thinking question from the current unit, or a preview of a unit coming up. Projects: Also, I will give occasional extra projects worth bonus points. It is in a separate grade in Skyward. Won’t count unless all formal assessments are completed. I love you but don't ask: There is nothing you can do at the end of any marking period to boost your grade. You should make sure you've seen me about any assignment marked "missing" - this means you can get points back on it). Otherwise, your grade is what it is. If extenuating circumstances have transpired and I feel as though your grades is not a fair or accurate representation of your skills, I will approach you.
